Spa City to vote on gun covering law Tuesday

SARATOGA SPRINGS - City leaders will vote this week on a move to make it illegal to carry a gun in the open.

The public safety commissioner says some people were startled to find people carrying rifles near the most recent gun shows at the city center.

Commissioner Chris Mathiesen says it is common sense to have people put their weapons in a bag.

Commissioner Mathiesen says he heard from a number of people following the recent gun shows in town, that they were alarmed by rifles being carried around without cases. So he wants to make it law to cover them up.

The Saratoga Springs City Center has been hosting gun shows for 30 years. In the past year, especially after the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, the shows and their organizers have been the subject of protest.

There’s even been an effort to get the shows cancelled.

Victims of burglary identify items in Washington County

HUDSON FALLS - Hundreds of pieces of jewelry and other valuables were on display at Hudson Falls High School Sunday.

All the items were stolen from homes throughout the North Country and in Vermont. Police are trying to connect the pieces with their rightful owners as they build a case against the accused burglar.

The evidence went on and on all around a room inside the school, all from what Glens Falls police say was their biggest burglary bust ever.

Some residents who believe they were victims came to try identify what might be theirs in a sea of stolen items.

Police say each pile on the tables represents one home.

One of those homes was Carolyn Whitney’s in Washington County. Even after the items have been recovered her home may never feel the same again. But Whitney says she's happy the man accused of being responsible is behind bars.

Vermont woman answers to fatal crash charges

FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) - A 31-year-old Vermont woman arrested after a fatal crash in upstate New York has been convicted of drunken and reckless driving. But a jury acquitted her of manslaughter and homicide.

The Glens Falls Post Star (http://bit.ly/11L61oo) reports Cassie Earley of Arlington, Vt., cried when she heard the Washington County jury's verdict Friday.

Prosecutors said her blood alcohol level was 0.18 percent when she crashed into an oncoming car at 7 a.m. on July 29 in the town of Hebron. That's more than twice the legal limit. The crash killed 83-year-old Vincent Muro Sr., of West Rutland, Vt. A passenger in Muro's car was injured.

She was tried on charges including drunken driving, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

Earley faces up to a year in prison when she's sentenced June 14.

8-year old survivor granted raceway wish

MALTA - An 8-year old boy went for the ride of his life Friday night in Malta. Just two months after surviving a heart-breaking tragedy, Matthew Sleight wound up in the winner's circle, lifted to a heart-warming celebrity status at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway.

Matthew arrived in style, riding in a shiny, black, stretch limousine, but that was just the beginning of an unforgettable night for the bright-eyed second grader.

"It's definitely a change for us," said Chris Sleight, Matthew's father. "The last few months, it's been obviously a rough road, up and down, there's days when he smiles and has a good time."

Back on March 10th, Matthew was a passenger in a car hit head-on by a van on Route 67 in Amsterdam. His mother Tanya, who was driving, and his older brother Elijah were killed in the crash. His 2-year old sister Naomi is still recovering.
