Experienced investigators seek party nod for county sheriff

BALLSTON SPA - At the end of this year, Jim Bowen will be walking out of the office he's held for more than forty years.

And Bowen is saying Wednesday who he wants to succeed him as Saratoga County Sheriff.

The sheriff is throwing his political clout behind Mike Zurlo, who worked under Bowen for 32 years.

"I respect that man. He's been a true mentor to me when I was with the Sheriff's Department," Zurlo said. "And to hear that, I'm very pleased."

Zurlo's path to top cop is not without a challenge. He's opposed by former state police senior investigator Jeff Gildersleeve, a former marine and long-time resident of Ballston Lake. Both men respect each other, but they both want the Republican nomination.

"I think the people of Saratoga County expect and deserve to have a professional law enforcement agency, which they do," said Gildersleeve.

NTSB: drop BAC threshold from .08 to .05

ALBANY - The National Transportation Safety Board said on Tuesday they intend to get tougher on drunk driving. With an ultimate goal of reaching zero alcohol related highway deaths, the NTSB proposed lowering the blood alcohol content to determine a drunk driver from .08 to .05.

More than 100 countries around the world have already adopted .05 as the legal standard. European nations that have done that have seen alcohol related fatalities more than cut in half.

Drunk driving kills 10,000 Americans every year. The NTSB thinks this country needs to do better.

"Alcohol impaired crashes are not accidents," says Deborah Hersman, chairman of the NTSB, "They are crimes."

Students witness staged drunken driving crash as pre-prom lesson

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The Saratoga Springs High School prom is this weekend. In advance of the event, students are getting an in-your-face lesson on the dangers of drinking and driving in the form of a mock DWI accident.

The lesson included arrests, multiple victims and a hearse.

The prom will be held at the City Center Saturday night. There are other proms in the area too.

Educators want to make sure prom goers don't end up in the ER or worse.

Police come rushing to the scene of a crash as part of the simulation where there were multiple victims and alcohol was involved.

The scene of this staged incident was in front of Saratoga Springs High School, with several hundred juniors and seniors looking on. They watched one of their class mates go through field sobriety tests. Another was placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. A third was zipped into a body bag and carted to a hearse.

Saratoga County veterans shelters hope clicks lead to big bucks

BALLSTON - The big old home on Route 50 doesn't house a family in the typical sense.

But like a family home, it's been the safety net for people who have no where else to turn.

People like Kathy Dunlap.

"This opened up and it was a godsend," she said.

Kathy has lived here at The Guardian House, a place for homeless women veterans, since just after it opened in October 2011. The former naval electronics technician will soon move into her own apartment.

She credits Guardian House with turning her life around.

"I literally was physically walking around in circles in my apartment because I didn't know where to go next," said Dunlap.

But the house, which has 11 veterans at a time and has others waiting to get in, needs work.

The garage and storage area is falling down.

And right now, it can't accommodate disabled veterans.
