Brookside hosts "Journey Through Rock City Falls"

Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, has announced that the fine art exhibit, “Journey Through Rock City Falls,” will feature work of local artist, Nancy McGrath, February 3 through April 30.
 
McGrath, of Rock City Falls, is an artist who is deeply attracted to the natural beauty of the area. McGrath’s work is a “journey” that explores not just the natural landscape but also the strong industrial history that the community is based on.

“Journey Through Rock City Falls” will on display in Brookside’s Long Room February 3 through April 30, 2011 during regular hours. McGrath will host an opening reception on Saturday, February 12 from noon till 4 p.m.

Community Center hosts ‘The Lost Jews of Kaifeng’

Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs has announced that they'll be sponsoring a Spring 2011 satellite broadcast series ‘Live from NY’s 92nd Street Y’ which they'll kick off with ‘The Lost Jews of Kaifeng.’

Partially sponsored by a grant from The United Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, this program brings lectures, interviews and readings from nationally and internationally recognized political figures, entertainers, newsmakers and authors to community organizations and provides an opportunity to take part in discussions with some of the world’s most fascinating people.

‘The Lost Jews of Kaifeng’ will be broadcast on Tuesday, February 15 at 8:15 p.m.  Hear the fascinating history of Jewish life in Kaifeng, China. Beginning during the Northern Sung Dynasty (960-1127), when the Jews of Persia and India traveled the Silk Road to Kaifeng.  The community thrived for many years, but eventually died out in 1860.  Shi Lei is a descendent of one of the original Jewish families in Kaifeng, China. A graduate of Henan University in China, he currently works as a national tour guide of Jewish sites in China.  This program is presented by the 92Y Resource Center for Jewish Diversity and Kulanu.

Brookside to host Victorian tea party

Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, will hold a Victorian Tea Party for local kids during winter recess on Thursday, February 24, 2011. 

Sue McLane, the Victorian Lady, will guide the kids through a celebration of Victorian culture, learning about clothing, manners, and pastimes.  The children will also plan, prepare, and enjoy a tea party.  Games and craft activities will also be included.

Two sessions will be held on February 24, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.  Fee for the tea party is $7.50 per child and is designed for children ages five to 12. Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 children in each session. Contact Linda by email at lgorham@brooksidemuseum.org to sign a child up.

Bottle Museum hosts glass sale

Bottle Museum hosts glass sale

Museum Glassworks, the teaching studio of The National Bottle Museum, will host a glass gift sale on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  

During the sale there will be flameworking demonstrations by special guest artist Sally Prasch and resident artists and instructors Larry Rutland and Lisa Daigle. Sally is an internationally known award winning flameworking artist.  Visitors will be able to witness the process of producing glass objects similar to those on sale. 

All the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the National Bottle Museum.

Information on flameworking classes conducted at the Glassworks will be available for those interested. Classes are available on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Reality Check sponsors free family movie

Reality Check of Saratoga, Washington, and Warren Counties will present a free showing of Gnomeo and Juliet in 3D on Tuesday, Feb. 22 in the Regal Cinemas of Wilton Mall.

Attendees will be seated at 12:30 p.m. with the movie beginning at 1.

The event is being held to support "International Week of Action." The week is promoted as a time for kids and their parents to demand Hollywood stop delivering the youth to the tobacco industry by glamorizing smoking, according to a release.

Reality-Check, a youth-led anti-tobacco action project, is part of a comprehensive tobacco control program developed by the New York State Department of Health.

Chamber discusses time management

Chamber discusses time management

The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce will hold a Women's Business Group meeting on Tuesday, February 8.

During the event participants will learn how to better manage their time. This includes help figuring out how and what to prioritize. The program is free and will run from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn on 125 South Broadway.
