August events announced for Saratoga Spa State Park

Saratoga Spa State Park is introducing a number of new events for garden enthusiasts. Below are events for August.

Tuesdays in August, 8:00-9:30 a.m.: Spa Park Garden Q&A

Caretakers of the Spa Park gardens, Dan and Joan, will be by the gardens at the Route 9 entrance of Avenue of the Pines every Tuesday through August 28th to answer your gardening questions. Come find out how they create such a dazzling entrance to Saratoga Spa State Park.  Participants will receive a brochure with a checklist of plants in the gardens along with their growing requirements. Hope to see you there! For more information please call 518-584-2000 Ext. 150.  Reservations are not needed.  Free parking is available at the Lincoln Bathhouse off Route 9 or the Warming Hut off the Avenue of the Pines.  Walk to the gardens from there.

Southern Saratoga Artists' Society to hold Colored Pencil Workshop

The Southern Saratoga Artists’ Society is sponsoring a Colored Pencil Workshop on Monday, Sept. 17 at the Mabee Farm Historic Site located at 1100 Main St. in Rotterdam Junction.

Cynthia Knox will be teaching the class.  Please join us and see what a great medium colored pencil is. The workshop will be $60 and includes a book (1 of 2 books published by Cynthia).  The time:  10:00 to 3:30 p.m. A supply list will be available.

Tug of War Fundraiser to be held

Tug of War Fundraiser to be held

On Saturday, August 8, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., The Knights of Columbus and the Malta Veterans Committee will be hosting a Tug of War Fundraiser to raise money for the Adaptive Sports Program for New York State disabled veterans at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.

Teams of 15 members will be in a tug of war battle against an 18 wheeler truck at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway.  They will compete to see who can tug the truck 50 feet in the shortest amount of time, with trophies awarded to the top three teams with the best times.

Brookside announces Horses and More to open Friday

Brookside announced that Horses and More will open on Friday, Aug. 3.

The exhibit opens this Friday and is free and open to the public. The exhibit along with the rest of the museum will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening and refreshments will be available.

The exhibit will be on display until Nov. 3 during regular museum hours.

The Saratoga County Historical Society at Brookside is a non-profit organization located at 6 Charlton Street in Ballston Spa.

Saratoga Senior Center to sponsor Lake Placid trip

On Tuesday, September 18, the Saratoga Senior Center will be sponsoring a bus trip to Lake Placid.

Participants will view the Adirondack Mountains from Whiteface Mountain, then head into the village for shopping and lunch before enjoying a scenic boat ride on Lake Placid.

The cost is $48 for members and $63 for non-members.

Admission will include bus fare, Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway fee, and boat fare. The center asks participants to bring their own lunch money.

The bus will leave the center at 7:30 a.m. and return at 8:30 p.m.

Adirondack Museum to host Dog Days of Summer

Adirondack Museum to host Dog Days of Summer

The Adirondack Museum will host the Dog Days of Summer beginning Aug. 4.

Author John Grogan will headline the annual event with a presentation called “Marley & Me: What Man’s Best Friend Can Teach Us About Being Human.”

There will be a Q&A session and a book signing by Grogan following the session and visitors are welcome to bring their dogs.

Participants will have the opportunity to partake in a luncheon featuring food at The Hedges which will begin at 11:45 a.m. and a cocktail reception at 5 p.m. Click here for cost and more details about the day’s events.
