NYSDOT begins two construction projects | News
New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Regional Director Mary E. has announced that construction is underway on two projects to improve traffic flow along the Route 9 corridor in the village of Round Lake and the town of Malta.
As part of this work, Maltaville Road will permanently close to traffic beginning next week at State Route 9.
Improvements include a $3 million project to build roundabouts at the intersection of Route 9 with Stonebreak Road, and Route 67 with a new entrance to Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta; and an $875,000 project to create a gateway to Round Lake by realigning the intersection of Route 9 with George Avenue and eliminating the Route 9 intersection at Maltaville Road.
Construction has begun on a new single-lane roundabout on Route 67 at Luther Forest Boulevard. Route 67 will be widened in order to make room for construction of the roundabout. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction during most of construction. There will be a two-week period when Route 67 westbound traffic will be placed in the new roundabout, while eastbound traffic is detoured off-site. The detour, approximately 13 miles long, will direct traffic south on Route 9 to Route 146 east to Routes 4/32 north and back to Route 67. It is expected to take up to 15 minutes, adding approximately eight minutes to travel times.
The detour is needed in order to complete the roundabout and associated drainage work. Once the roundabout is complete, this will become the main entrance to Luther Forest Technology Campus. The roundabout is expected to be open to traffic before the end of summer. As part of the project, the intersection of Route 67 and Old State Road has been permanently closed.
The Round Lake Gateway project will begin shortly. George Avenue will be closed for approximately three weeks while the intersection with Route 9 in realigned. The intersection will be reconfigured into a “T” intersection in order to improve safety at that location. Maltaville Road will be permanently closed as part of the project. This permanent closure will reduce through traffic in the village, preserving the community’s historic charm. Through traffic from Interstate 87 heading toward Luther Forest Technology Campus will use the Round Lake Bypass, opened to traffic in 2009.
Construction will begin late this summer on a new two-lane roundabout at Route 9 and Stonebreak Road. During construction, the entrance to Luther Forest at this intersection will be closed and traffic will be directed to the new Route 67 entrance. Two lanes of Route 9 will be closed to traffic, with one lane maintained in each direction. The roundabout is expected to open to traffic in November.
The projects were both awarded to Kubricky Construction Corporation of Wilton, Saratoga County, and are being progressed concurrently. Work, including drainage and landscaping, is expected to be completed this fall.
