Drop Boxes for donated clothing: For profit or charity?

SCHENECTADY - You see the colorful containers in parking lots across the region: drop boxes for used clothing and shoes. You may think that favorite old coat and pair of designer jeans you give away, are going to help someone in need.

But they're also helping a business turn a profit.

We're not talking about the Salvation Army or Good Will here. It's the other boxes that make different claims: that your donations will go to a charity, for recycling, or that you're helping the environment.

In our In Depth report, we track down the owners behind them to ask what's going on.

Sailor's body recovered from Saratoga County lake

GALWAY - The water was apparently too cold even for a trained sailor.

Divers were called to the west shore of Galway Lake, not far from Camp Road, at about 7:30 Sunday night.

But they weren't able to rescue a 23-year old sailor stationed at the Kesselring site in Saratoga County.

State police divers were called in to assist Monday morning and, at about 2:30 in the afternoon, they recovered Jacob C. Miller's lifeless body.

A state police spokeswoman tells WNYT that  Miller, who is from Salina, Kansas, went for a swim as his fellow sailors stood on the shore. Miller yelled for help, but it was too dark for him to be located, say police.

Police say it appears there was no foul play and no alcohol involved, but that Miller was likely overcome by the cold water, estimated at approximately 40-degrees Fahrenheit.

Glens Falls man accused of threatening social services workers

GLENS FALLS - He's a 24-year old man with a history of mental illness. And this time, police say Adam Stemmons went too far.

He's accused of threatening county social services workers with a pellet gun because they wouldn't increase his food stamp benefits. When police intervened, they say Stemmons threatened them too.

Glens Falls Police say they've had at least ten run-ins with him over the years.

They say this case underscores the challenges police and prosecutors have dealing with the mentally ill.

"Whether or not they know what they're doing, or fully understand what they're doing, they still need to be held accountable," says Chief Will Valenza of the Glens Falls Police  Departmen Department.

Police collect phones for domestic violence victims

STILLWATER - A Saratoga County community is using cell phones to combat domestic violence.

The Stillwater Police Department is collecting used cell phones to give to victims of domestic violence. The phones will be re-programmed so victims can call 911 if they need to.

"They're actually a life line. There are people out there that for whatever reasons they don't have cell phones. They have no way of communicating. You have to remember a lot of these perpetrators the first thing they do is rip the phone line right out of the wall, so the victim can't call,” said Sgt. Ray Cordani of the Stillwater Police Department.

Stillwater police have collected nearly 4,000 used phones since 2003. They distribute them throughout Saratoga and Rensselaer counties.
