Saratoga backstretch dorms get needed upgrades

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The new dorms are in a section of the backstretch known as Horse Haven. And until now, some might think that horses have better living conditions than the people who care for them.

But NYRA's newly renovated rooms have built in air conditioning and baseboard heat. They have adjoining shower and locker facilities.

"The importance of doing this is to provide a better quality of life for the grooms that we have. To give them better living conditions overall," said Peter Goulet, NYRA's facilities manager.

The new dorms have twelve rooms apiece. Each room can sleep two or three people.

This is just the beginning of the renovations. NYRA says they want to upgrade all of the dorms and they say they'll get back to work on construction as soon as the racing season is over.
