Spa School board to SED: butt out!

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The Saratoga Springs School Board did something extraordinary Tuesday night: they told the State Education Department to butt out and let them educate their kids the way they see fit.

Beginning next week, third through eighth graders statewide will take their English Language Arts and Math exams, part of the Common Core Curriculum adopted by the Regents a few years ago.

On that eve of that testing, the Saratoga Springs School District is sending a message to SED: Don't over-stress our kids, and we believe there are better ways to measure student progress.

When test scores are added up for elementary and middle school students who begin taking the Common Core exams, the State Education Department is predicting many of those scores will be below grade level expectations.

Teachers in the Saratoga Springs School District have a big problem with that.

BALLSTON SPA - Some Saratoga County senior citizens received a lesson in criminal justice Tuesday.

They asked questions ranging from how bail is determined to what kinds of crimes are presented to a grand jury.

They learned that cases are rarely as simple as they're portrayed in television dramas.

The course is offered through Empire State College over an eight week-period and also includes lessons from police investigators, judges and defense attorneys.

Yepsen is first to announce candidacy for mayor in Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS - 54-year-old Joanne Yepsen has served as one of the few Democrats on the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors since 2006.

"I am Joanne Yepsen and I'm running for mayor of our wonderful city of Saratoga Springs," announced Yepsen Monday afternoon to a crowd of about 100 supporters gathered at Lillian's restaurant.

When asked, Yepsen said she was planning to run even before Republican Scott Johnson decided to not seek re-election. "We were planning to run for this office, yes."

During her campaign announcement, Yepsen promised weekly open office hours for people to meet with her.

And she talked about the importance of landing a full-fledged casino for the Spa City.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed several Las Vegas-style casinos around the state, but says where they should go will be decided after voters approve an amendment to make them legal.
