State Parks Saratoga to Host a Geocache Challenge

 

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The Saratoga/Capital District Region of New York State Parks is hosting a geocache challenge.

Geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which the participants use a GPS or alternative mobile device and basic navigational techniques to find hidden outdoor containers, called geocaches.

The challenge begins on Memorial Day Weekend and extends through Veteran’s Day, November 11th.

Geocache passports can be picked up at the office of any participating park or site, or downloaded from the agency’s webpage here.

Three New Ride Experiences at The Great Escape in 2013

 

LAKE GEORGE -  The Great Escape announced the addition of two new rides for the 2013 season on Thursday.

Along with the all-new Screamin’ Eagles, the park will debut the renovated Blizzard indoor scrambler and Marshal’s Stampede indoor bumper car attraction in Ghost Town.

The park is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19th.

Applications being accepted for Innovative Education Grants

 

SCOTIA – The Scotia-Glenville Education Foundation is currently accepting grant applications for students in the school district.

Applications are being accepted both for grants to award in April 2013 as well as in the future as funds allow. Initial proposals should not exceed $1,000.

Annual Hannaford Kidz Expo

 

ALBANY – On Saturday, March 2, the Eight Annual Hannaford Kidz Expo will be held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.

Presented by the new York State Office of General Services the Hannaford Kidz Expo provides families entertainment and education featuring dance and theatre performances, wildlife experts, music, arts and crafts, sports activities and more.

Featured performers this year include Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey CircusFit and a Barney Sing-A-Long as well as interactive activities such as the Reptile Adventure Room, Roaming Railroad, face painting, balloon animals and more.

NY State writing program held for gifted high school students

SARATOGA SPRINGS –A summer creative writing workshop for gifted high school students entering grades 10-12 in Sept. 2013 has been announced. Following is more information:

The program, which offers workshops in poetry, fiction and nonfiction, is open to all public and private school students.

The cost, including tuition, room, board and materials is $1194, and there is a $40 non-refundable application fee.

Full and partial financial aid is available based on need.

The session meets from June 26–July 6. Applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2013. Notification is April 20, 2013.

Winterfest to be held at Saratoga Spa State Park

 

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The 2013 Saratoga Springs Winterfest will begin at Saratoga Spa State Park with a family style candlelight ski and snowshoe on Friday, February 1st from 6 - 8:30 p.m.

The park will also be offering ice skating and hot food and drinks and snowshoes will be available to rent. 

The event will take place at the Warming Hut from 6 - 8:30 p.m.

CAPITAL REGION - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is now accepting submissions for the annual Arbor Day Poster Contest. Following is more information:

Fifth grade students, especially in science and art, are encouraged to design an original poster depicting the 2013 contest theme, Trees Are Terrific in All Shapes and Sizes.

DEC Commissioner Joe Martens said, “Arbor Day is a national observance that celebrates the essential role trees play in our environment. By participating in the annual Arbor Day poster contest, students learn about trees and how they promote a healthy, balanced ecosystem.”
