Students witness staged drunken driving crash as pre-prom lesson

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The Saratoga Springs High School prom is this weekend. In advance of the event, students are getting an in-your-face lesson on the dangers of drinking and driving in the form of a mock DWI accident.

The lesson included arrests, multiple victims and a hearse.

The prom will be held at the City Center Saturday night. There are other proms in the area too.

Educators want to make sure prom goers don't end up in the ER or worse.

Police come rushing to the scene of a crash as part of the simulation where there were multiple victims and alcohol was involved.

The scene of this staged incident was in front of Saratoga Springs High School, with several hundred juniors and seniors looking on. They watched one of their class mates go through field sobriety tests. Another was placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. A third was zipped into a body bag and carted to a hearse.

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Saratoga Education week will be held May 13-17 to celebrate student achievement in the district.

Various events will be held to showcase student accomplishments, including concerts, science, art and drama shows, and other projects linked to the curriculum.

"Saratoga Education Week celebrates the talents and accomplishments of students and staff,” said Superintendent Michael Piccirillo.  “During Education Week parents and the community are invited to participate in activities showcasing the creative and innovative spirit of our district."

LATHAM - The President of the New York State United Teachers said parents should expect their children to do worse on next month's standardized tests.

"There's going to be a test score and it's going to be an inaccurate rating of your child's ability," said Richard Iannuzzi, of NYSUT.

Applications being accepted for Innovative Education Grants

Applications being accepted for Innovative Education Grants

 

SCOTIA – The Scotia-Glenville Education Foundation is currently accepting grant applications for students in the school district.

Applications are being accepted both for grants to award in April 2013 as well as in the future as funds allow. Initial proposals should not exceed $1,000.

Oppenheim-Ephratah, St. Johnsville Board of Education election postponed

 

ST. JOHNSVILLE— In response to tomorrow’s weather forecast, the New York State Education Department has postponed the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Board of Education election that was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19.

The state is currently working on rescheduling the election.

More information will be released as soon as it is available.

Students prepare to dance for 36th year

GLENS FALLS - The student body at South Glens Falls High School is at it again. They're lacing up their dancing shoes for the 36th Annual South High Marathon Dance.

This isn't just fun and games for the student body at South Glens Falls High School. Though there's plenty of that, there's also plenty of work.

They've been working for months to prepare and raise money for their annual dance marathon. Each of the 800 student dancers collects a minimum of $150.

But that's just part of it. They plan and put on dozens of fundraisers throughout the community in support of the dance.

The students at South High have been dancing for 36 years. Last year, they raised almost $400,000.

Every penny goes to those in need -- ranging from local organizations seeking cures for rare diseases to local families battling cancer.

Skidmore College benches men's soccer after reports of drinking and hazing

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The Skidmore College men's spring soccer season is canceled and 28 students, including 24 team members, face disciplinary proceedings.

Rochelle Calhoun, Skidmore's Dean of Student Affairs, says the team is being held out as an example.

The school says most of the team was involved in a drinking party at a house  The school says it believes some of the 24-student athletes were pressured into drinking by their teammates at the November 30 party at a home on Jefferson Street.

So, Skidmore is sending a message by cancelling the entire spring soccer season.

"It was important for students to understand that behavior has consequences," said Calhoun. "And the college wants to demonstrate that we take these behaviors, these situations, very seriously."
