BSEF will hold 13th annual gold tournament Oct. 10

The Ballston Spa Education Foundation (BSEF) will hold their 13th annual golf tournament on Monday, Oct. 10.

Registration for the tournament will begin at 12 p.m. and there will be a shotgun start time at 1 p.m. at the Ballston Spa Country Club.  The cost for one person is $125 and $400 for a four person team.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and is included in the cost of registration. Along with the tournament there will be a hole-in-one contest, a putting contest, and raffles.

BSEF is a volunteer organization that supports the mission of the Ballston Spa Central School District. They award grants to teachers and administrators for special projects that are not included in the school’s official budget.

Unattended backpack deemed not a threat at Mechanicville Jr./Sr. High School

In a letter from Principal Kevin Kolakowski posted on the Mechanicville City School District website, the district is informing parents of an incident that happened shortly after school started last Friday.

SC Sheriff Deputy noticed an unattended backpack outside the school’s entrance which was left there for an extended period of time.  An investigation followed and there was a heightened police presence at the school because of it and it ensure the safety of everyone at the school.

It was found by the Saratoga County Sheriff, State Police, and school personnel that the bag was not a threat.

BSHS remembers 9/11

Students from Ballston Spa High School took time out of their day today to remember the events of 9/11.

Students, school leaders, faculty, staff, local dignitaries, veterans, and community emergency service personnel all participated in the event.  A dedication of a 9/11 plaque and two trees near the school’s varsity baseball field was also included in the event.

“Our current high school students have grown up in the post 9/11 world,” said Principal Kristi Jensen in a press release. “Today is an important day for them to actively recall how the world around them has been shaped by the events of that day.  Today is designed for them to remember what happened, the sacrifices that have been made by others, and help them understand their role in the larger civic community as we continue to move forward as a nation.”

UAlbany students teach in Uganda

Four UAlbany students are in Uganda until Friday after being awarded the first place showing in the Newman’s Own Foundation national campus community service challenge.  The two groups who are in Uganda are Third World Impact and The Giving Circle of Saratoga. 

The students will teach classes on hygiene, health, and HIV-AIDS prevention as well as starting the process of building a primary school in Wairaka which is a small village in Jinja.

“We have already bought the land for the school and finished the construction of a playground for the village kids,” said UAlbany senior and Third World Impact President Nishtha Modi, on the school’s website. “This playground will be a part of the primary school. We built the playground first so the village kids could have a place to enjoy their childhood and be kids again.” Modi is also director of the Uganda project at the University.

Individuals to be honored at the Blue Streak Athletic Hall of Fame

Eleven individuals will be inducted into the Blue Streak Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m.  The individuals are being honored by the Saratoga Springs City School District and include, Keith Cummings, Kevin Cummings, William Dalrymple, Erin Davis, Ed Meixler, John Nichols, Don Pepper, George Perkins, Scott Perkins, and Katherine, and Ralph Stacey.

The program recognizes individuals whose support has played a critical role in the school and community athletic programs, according to Peter Sheehan, the school district’s director of athletics and physical education.

A committee which is made up of current and former coaches, high school administrators, community members, and current and retired athletic directors reviewed the nominations and picked the honorees.

The honorees will also be recognized during the high school’s first home football game on Sept. 9.

Saratoga County School students are displaying their art and science exhibits at the 170th Saratoga County Fair through July 24.

For the first time, every school district in Saratoga County was represented in the Education Exhibit at the Saratoga County Fair.

The first place winner is the Ballston Spa Central School District. Along with trophies and ribbons, they will receive a TV-DVD. The second place winner is the South Glens Falls School District and they will receive a DVD player, trophy and ribbons.  Third Place went to Saratoga Springs School District. They will receive a TV along with a trophy and ribbons.

Saratoga Springs High School hosts 138th graduation

SARATOGA SPRINGS- After 13 years of school, they weren't about to let a little rain slow them down.
    
Saratoga Springs High School held its 138th graduation ceremony Friday morning at SPAC.
    
488 seniors walked across SPAC’s stage to receive their diplomas.
    
The school's most coveted awards, the Yaddo Medals, were given to two students, Conor Arpey and Kaeleen O'Connor as the graduates who most embody scholarship and citizenship.
