Ballston Spa students learn the importance of saving

A lot of adults today can't seem to balance their checkbook or credit card debt. So some adults of the future are getting an early start on their economic IQ.

NewsChannel 13 looked into how one financial institution is banking on getting more students to save.

Student Matt Sherman is about to make a deposit, right here at Ballston Spa Middle School, where the TCT Credit Union is just opening up its newest branch.

“The biggest thing is about saving-showing them the time value of money and getting them to systematically save,” said Irv Hilts of TCT Credit Union.

Because as some of the issues affecting the economy show not all adults learned the lesson of saving.

So, Ballston Spa students can now go from learning how to add, to understanding how money adds up when you put some of it away.

Last Days To Vote

SCHOHARIE - While students in the Schoharie School District enjoy winter break this week, they'll be working to "get out the vote."

The district is among 12 finalists in a national competition sponsored by Samsung. The grand prize winner receives $100,000 in new technology for its school.

"This will mean day and night difference for our students, trying to be competitive," said English teacher Amie Hausmann.

The district is desperate for new computer equipment and a morale boost after Tropical Storm Irene plowed into the village.

Hausmann lost her home during Irene in August 2011. She understood the loss so many of her students were going through.

Six months later, the village is recovering. The disaster has proved to be a teaching moment in her classroom every day since.
