CLIFTON PARK - A school bus was involved in an accident in Clifton Park. It happened just before 12 p.m. Thursday near Schauber and Hubbs Road.

The bus, which was returning back to the Burnt Hills Central School District, was not carrying children and the driver has been transported to Ellis Hospital.

NY loses some ground in national school ratings

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York was the only state to see a decline in its math score for fourth graders in a national assessment of public schools, which shows mostly stagnant academic progress over the last two years.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress, a widely cited testing program, found New York's fourth graders who took the math test in the spring had a lower average score than the national average, and lower than 30 other states. The 2011 New York score was lower than the 2009 score, but still higher than the 1992 score, the earliest comparison included in Tuesday's report.

Nationally in 2011, 40 percent of fourth-graders scored above the proficiency level, compared with 38 percent in 2009. In New York, the numbers went in the other direction: 36 percent were proficient in 2011, a drop from 40 percent in 2009.

NY seeks fed grant to bolster kids in early grades

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York is seeking a $100 million grant to make students better prepared for kindergarten.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says 44 percent of New York's third graders don't meet state reading standards, giving students a bad start to their academic careers.

State Education Commissioner John King says the grant would help the current effort by the state Board of Regents to improve the readiness of students from pre-kindergarten through elementary school.

In part the funding would be used for a new assessment process that would evaluate if a student is ready to advance to the next grade.
