RENSSELAER, N.Y. (AP) - New York lawmakers are pushing Amtrak to add baggage cars to its passenger trains that would be capable of carrying bicycles.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and state Sens. Betty Little of Warren County and Brad Hoylman of Manhattan say such a move would get more visitors and tourism dollars into New York state.

They discussed their plan Monday at Amtrak's Albany-Rensselaer (rehn-suh-LEER') station.

The lawmakers want Amtrak to add baggage cars that could carry bicycles on the Adirondack and Ethan Allen trains, which run from Penn Station in Manhattan to the Albany area, Saratoga and destinations in New York's North Country and Vermont.

Amtrak says bikes can now be checked in as baggage for $10 each at some larger stations on those lines and it's generally looking at ways to accommodate more cyclists.

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - The Americade motorcycle rally at Lake George starts this weekend and motorists are being cautioned to be alert for bikers on the Thruway and the Northway.

Americade will run for a week starting Saturday and is billed as the world's largest touring rally. It draws about 50,000 people to the southeast Adirondacks, many of them using I-87 in the days leading up to events.

Riders also tour scenic Adirondacks roads and accidents are reported each year, some of them serious.

The Thruway Authority has safety warnings running on electronic message boards urging drivers to be alert for motorcycles.

Saratoga Chamber Launches Petition for Bikes on Trains

Saratoga Chamber Launches Petition for Bikes on Trains

SARATOGA SPRINGS – An online petition, launched by The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce asks Amtrak to allow bikes on trains between NYC and Canada

"Allowing bikes on Amtrak trains between New York City and Montreal is a common sense idea that is good for our environment and local economy, as it would further promote Saratoga and its many bike trails as a premier destination for 'green travel.' Saratoga Springs is home to some terrific cycling trails, so it is logical to request that Amtrak allow bikes on its trains running between New York City and Montreal so travelers can enjoy all that our local great outdoors have to offer,” said Sen. Marchione, one of the petition’s supporters.

The petition is available for public viewing here.

Agencies issue summer driving safety tips

ALBANY – New York State Police, New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and the New York State Thruway Authority are reminding drivers of the dangers that come with nice weather.

Deer become more active during the months of May and June and are seen on most roadways in the state.

To prevent a collision with a deer drivers are asked to be alert, especially in the morning and evening, scan roadsides, and remember that deer travel in groups.

They are also issuing a reminder about motorcycles. With nice weather some of the nearly 700,000 registered motorcycles will be on our roads and highways.

Some safety tips are to always allow a motorcycle use of a full lane, look twice or even three times in all mirrors and blind spots, don’t tailgate and always signal.

1 lane re-open on I-87's northbound 2 lanes remain closed at Twin Bridges

COLONIE - One of the northbound lanes of the area's main north-south interstate highway has reopened, but the other two remain closed because of delays at a bridge renovation project.

The state Department of Transportation says the left lane on the bridge carrying Interstate 87, the Adirondack Northway, over the Mohawk river reopened around noon Monday. The center and right lanes on Thaddeus Kosciuszko  Bridge have been closed since before 6 a.m.

DOT officials say the closure was caused by delays in securing the old bridge deck with steel plates. There's no indication when the other lanes would reopen.

Northbound traffic is being diverted off the highway to nearby Route 9.

A $29 million project to replace the bridge's decking began this past weekend on the span's northbound side.

Construction on Twin Bridges set to begin

COLONIE - A heavily traveled bridge in the Capital Region is set to undergo repair work.

The Department of Transportation is replacing the decking on the Twin Bridges on the Northway.

Beginning Friday, September 7, crews will replace the decking on the northbound lanes.

Northbound drivers will be directed to the southbound side of the bridge, which will have one lane open in each direction.

All lanes will be open for the Labor Day and Columbus Day weekends.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of October.

The southbound deck will be replaced next year.
